Litigation is supposed to resolve disputes with finality. An award of permanent alimony does the opposite and creates a lifetime of perpetual court action. Moreover, what seems to get lost in this discussion is the children. Permanent alimony creates such acrimony between the divorcing spouses that the children bear a burden even as they grow into adulthood. This is because the divorce never ends, so the healing never begins.
